A glucose drink is a special type of drink given to pregnant women or diabetics who need to undergo a gestational diabetes test. The drink is usually given in a portion of approximately 500ml and has to be drunk in five minutes or less. The drink is  usually followed by between one and three blood tests to check how the person’s body reacts to the glucose.

Glucose drinks may also be purchased commercially and used by people who are in sports training or have special dietary needs.

How it tastes

The glucose drink tastes almost identical to lemonade.


If you’re having difficulty drinking the drink because you don’t like lemonade, ask for or bring your own straw. This may make it easier to drink the liquid in the required time.

Barium is used as a method of checking the digestive system because of its opacity during X-Rays. The most common forms of giving the liquid before an X-Rays is via a meal or enema. The patient usually ingests special gas pellets and citric acid then has approximately 3 cups of barium.

How it tastes

The best description of barium is a thick, white chalky drink. It’s as thick as a thin milkshake and has been described as anything from citrus to simply plain and flavorless, with a bitter after taste.


The barium drink is considered the worst part of the test – the scan itself is relatively painless. Although barium is not bad for the body, the amounts needed for a scan can result in stomach and bowel upsets for up to 48 hours.

How it tastes

Castor oil tastes like a thick oil (imagine drinking straight cooking oil).

The flavor resembles soap and is fairly bland.


Many people cannot stomach the taste and mix it with other things such as juice. Orange juice is a common recommendation.

What Does Liquid Echinacea Taste Like?

Echinacea is a plant that is commonly used as a remedy for a range of infections and health problems, in particular colds and flus. The plant is similar in appearance to a daisy and has a pink flower. This herb is usually given in either liquid or pill form, depending on the quality and concentration required, or on personal preference.

How it tastes

Most liquid echinacea products have an alcoholic base. Although the taste may vary between brands and mixtures, the taste is generally described as very bad – some people think the taste is reminiscent of extremely overpowering Sambuca (a licorice tasting alcoholic drink.)


To make the liquid more palatable you can try taking it with grape juice. Otherwise, try taking it as a shot, chased by something you like, such as your favorite drink or a strong flavored food. It will leave quite an after taste otherwise!

Epsom salts are named for the town of Epsom in Surrey, England. They contain magnesium, oxygen and sulfur. It is often used medically and is also a common ingredient in bath salts and used in gardening among a variety of other uses.

How they taste

The taste is reminiscent of salt in some ways; however it is also extremely bitter. Mixing it with water or food makes it slightly more palatable but some people have described the taste as “Similar to battery fluid.”


Since epsom salt is a laxative, it’s important to only take it orally on a medical professional’s advice.

What Does Ural Taste Like?

Ural is and effervescent powder used to treat urinary tract infections such as cystitis. Ingredients include sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid, citric acid anhydrous, sodium citrate anhydrous and saccharin. The powder comes in small sachets that can be mixed into a glass of water and drunk to relieve the burning and stinging pain associated with UTIs.

How it tastes

Ural (Original flavor) has a strong taste akin to plain carbonated water with a hint of sour citrus taste. Although some people don’t mind the taste, most people wouldn’t choose to drink this regularly and instead gulp it down.


Ural only relieves the pain, it doesn’t fix the UTI. The best thing to do is drink lots of water, take probiotics and cranberry. If you experience ongoing or severe pain, or blood in the urine, you need to see a doctor to get a prescription for antibiotics.
